______

An oversized kaleidoscope made from recycled plastic bottles was taking shape. The installation is designed to be participatory and can be turned by the visitors themselves. This continuously creates new compositions of light and colour, which spread throughout the room and transform it into an ever-changing image. Inside, fragments of cut-up plastic bottles move about, their spontaneous and not planned arrangements multiplied by mirrors to form symmetrical patterns. At the same time, the incoming daylight alters the effect of the installation depending on the time of day, the weather and the season. This creates a dynamic space in which colour, light and movement are in a state of constant flux.

A kaleidoscope appeals to fundamental human mechanisms of perception. Symmetrical patterns convey a sense of order and are perceived as pleasing, whilst their constant change captures the viewer’s attention. This balance between structure and chance creates complex yet comprehensible images with a calming, meditative effect.

The installation is immediately accessible and can be experienced by people of all ages. It requires no prior knowledge and encourages active participation. The use of recycled plastic also alludes to transformation and reuse, by transforming an everyday waste material into a poetic and sensory context.

They appear as though they have been built into the real world. Clean lines and surfaces blend into the physical environment. Real shadows are cast by constantly shifting light onto shapes inspired by the world of gaming. The geometric objects are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also practical and interactive. You can sit on them, relax or use them, for example, as a winners’ podium. They are self-explanatory and intuitive.

Thanks to their modular design, the PLAYBLOCKS can be arranged and used in a wide variety of ways. The PLAYBLOCKS concept is expandable. Using projections, sensors and integrated LEDs, they open portals to virtual worlds.

Ten PLAYBLOCKS will soon be installed at the Donaubad in Ulm. (Ger)
